Upholstered Chair

10 fabrics, acrylic paint, crackle glaze

Combining her expertise in furniture and fabric, Lesley has quilted a seat for this chair that echoes the hues of the table legs and backing. The fabrics Lesley chose each gift a distinct character to the chair, one which pays homage to the classical structure in a soft vintage floral pattern, and others which emulate the bright tones with bold patterns and strong lines.

The wood is unrestrained, a chartreuse tone-on-tone floral on the sides, a textured turquoise crackle on the backing, and leg and back supports done with a three colored alcohol rub technique to reveal layers of chartreuse, turquoise, and a deep chocolate brown.

Lesley’s mixing of mediums has a surprising balance. By using various patterns that counter one another on the seat, and minimizing their surface area, engagement is dispersed around the quilting as a whole. When Lesley then introduces attention-grabbing colors, the medium of painting finds its unexpected pair in fabric.
