Red and Purple

acrylic paint, crackle glaze, transparent glazes

In an experimental manner, this chair—which excited Lesley with its “sassy” lines—and the side table became color studies for the bureau. The client requested cherry red and purple, which provided a welcome challenge for Lesley.

With the chair, Lesley grounded the vibrant cherry red on the seat with the teals and purples on the supporting legs and back. The pattern seems more intuitive than strictly ordered, with the teal dots bleeding out into space, and the expressionist strokes of purple having complete freedom on the surface. The organic application of purple paint on the supports of the chair find their referent in the free-handed strokes, and the teal with its even coverage grounds the teal dots.

As an inversion of the chair, the side table has the same style, but the colors for each element are swapped to the effect of a more subtle piece—a great complement to the chair. A nice addition, the singular dot on the base of the table is protected by the uniquely shaped table legs, no element of the table left without character.

The bureau takes the bold seat of the chair and the beautiful purple hues from the side table and gives them each surfaces to occupy. The loud front of the draws calls for attention, and the purple grounds the intuitive purple strokes such that everything is eclectically cohesive.
