Line Quilt

Lesley plays with order and disorder in this piece, speaking to a symbiotic relationship between freedom and rigidity in its creation. The underlying schema is constructed of right angles, rectangles, squares, to the effect of seemingly localized ecosystems of color, pattern, and shape. Yet, this rigidity is disrupted by lines that reach diagonally across squares and between them, rupturing the structure. Once the eye catches the erroneous elements, Lesley’s playing becomes clear, seeing her hand innately move to the next area, linking the focal points to one another to the effect of a ‘stream of consciousness’ and a visible process.
Lesley’s awareness of space, balance, and form is present in the reds and pinks that communicate across the quilt as a grounding element, upon which patterns that excite ‘pop’ on the surface. The quilt, at first glance, is not over-stimulating, but rather calming, inviting the viewer to examine the elements, at which point the quilt becomes intriguing, exciting, and full of life.
